*Cher Horowitz, Clueless
Being home for the Thanksgiving long weekend was a much-needed break from DC. It was refreshing (even though I came back sick), and it was a welcome reminder that some things never change.
- Like my best girl friends from high school – we can still pick up right where we left off.
- Like my parents’ friends at church, who always ask me a) how work is, and b) if I’m dating anyone yet.
- Like Black Friday, when my mother and I brave the crowds and “save” money, by only buying things on sale.

- Like PIC, who introduces me to a new guy every time I go back to Philly.
In this case, though, there was a welcome difference. The guy she introduced me to this time was much funnier and more entertaining than some from the past. And I’m a sucker for someone who can make me laugh. At one point, he asked me what two movies I would stop everything and watch, if they came on TV right then. And then he answered: Ghostbusters and Clueless.
It’s okay. I laughed, too. (Surprisingly, though, he’s not the first guy I’ve met who loves that movie.) But the better part was that he laughed at himself. And it made me think about the qualities of those certain movies – the ones you always have to stop and watch.
It wasn’t one of my answers for him then, but flipping through channels last night, I came across Invincible. And I had to keep it on. It’s not just because it’s about the Eagles (though, that doesn’t hurt); I feel the same way about Miracle and Remember the Titans. It’s partially the underdog story, and partially the fact that it’s true (or based on truth). Plus, I still get chills every time Papale scores against the Giants.
And no matter how often I’ve seen each of those movies, I never get tired of watching them. It’s one of those things that I hope never changes.
Now I’m curious: my original two movies were Empire Records and Boondock Saints (though, admittedly, it may change with my mood) – what would yours be?
Indulge me.

“Dirty Dancing”. That is the only one I ALWAYS stop on.
“I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”
Oh, and “Miracle”? I love it. I am from new England…I have to love hockey movies.
Yes! Excellent quote, excellent movie. I’d stop for that one, too. But I haven’t seen it on TV in ages.
You should see Rudy, one of only a handful of movies which men can cry at.
So what else have you cried at? I mean…are you *allowed* to cry at?
Hoosiers! And Blue Steel. Ok maybe not that one. Probably History of the World part 1.
I might have to give History of the World Part I another chance. My old roommate vetoed it when we started watching before.
Boondock Saints, definitely top 5… but Princess Bride will ALWAYS be my all-encompassing #1.
Oh god, that’s a classic. My brother and I used to quote it non-stop. (Okay, sometimes we still do.) “No more rhymes this time I mean it.” “Anybody want a peanut?” It’s sad, really.
13 Going on 30
Hitch
Wedding Crashers
Sister Act (1&2)
and of course the sports movies…they rock.
Oh my god, you just made my night. I used to watch Sister Act (the first one) at every sleepover I had. And I MAY have even had a dance to the music video they play in the beginning. Just saying…
The ones I always stop on?? Always?
The Wedding Singer–We watched it so much in college that THREE people bought us the movie one year for the holidays.
Zoolander–Um, HELLO. The most quotable movie of all time.
Dirty Dancing–Enough said.
Marie Antoinette–Its just so gorgeous, I am constantly sucked in.
10 Things I Hate About You–An underrated quotable gem.
“I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?” “I think you can in Europe.”
As found on IMDB and still one of my faves:
Walter Stratford: This morning, I delivered a set of twins to a fifteen-year-old girl, do you know what she said to me?
Bianca: “I’m a crack-whore who should have made my skeazy boyfriend wear a condom”?
Walter Stratford: Close, but no. She said, “I should have listened to my father”.
Bianca: She did not.
Walter Stratford: Well, that’s what should would have said if she wasn’t so doped up!
And then…Chef & I still randomly bust out Adam Sandler’s version of Holiday when drunk.
“Holidaaaaaaaaaaaay. Celebrrrrrrrrrrrrate. I LIVE in my sister’s BASEMENNNNNNNNNT!!”
Oh wow.
Well, Invincible is clearly key in this household as well… and can you not stop jumping around that we defied the entire world and BEAT the GIANTS for REAL??? WOOOOOOOO!! Much jumping and shaking of booties.
I cannot stop watching Marie Antoinette – and oddly enough, neither can my children. They dig the soundtrack as well. They even know to leave the room the second the song kicks in that starts the scene with her wearing little more than a smile and a well-placed fan. “Homeschool”… snort.
My daughter will stop dead in her tracks and watch anything with Sean Connery or Kevin Costner in it – so if it’s Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, or … Dr. No? and I need a break, who am I to dissuade her?
Fargo – sans kiddos
Pulp Fiction – again w/o kids (Though my husband did recently teach my daughter to say “I’m going to get medieval on [you]!) (Dude.)
O, Brother, Where Art Thou? – kids dig it – probably don’t get it, but like it anyway
Any of the movies based on Jane Austen novels – yes, I’m one of them… but that would also technically include Clueless!
