Just a year ago I was less than pleased with the idea of having Michael Vick on my Eagles. I told you all, I believe in second chances, but couldn’t someone else have offered it to him? Why us? And then, resigned to the fact, I thought, well, it’s fine if he’s on the team, as long as I don’t have to cheer for him.
I guess now is about the time that I start eating my words.
Michael Vick is officially the starting quarterback for the Eagles. And I’m oddly okay with this.
First of all, I don’t miss McNabb. Yes, Redskins fans, I know he led you to a victory against the Cowboys. I know that many of you think that we don’t appreciate everything that he did for Philly, but we do. We just got tired of getting so close to a Super Bowl and never getting a ring.
I was also never a huge Kevin Kolb fan. I don’t dislike him, but he never wowed me. And now he’s taking after his predecessor, getting hurt so early on in the season. I get that football’s a rough and tumble sport and that injuries are inevitably part of the game. But come on.*
So it comes down to Vick. And watching the game on Sunday against Detroit, I have to say it: I was impressed. Sure, the Eagles tried to give the game away toward the end. And there were far too many penalties for my taste. But from what I could tell (and I’m clearly an expert), he was on his game.
And so, at the risk of being a flip-flopper, I’ll be cheering wholeheartedly for Vick against Jacksonville this Sunday. (And even more so against the Redskins in a couple weeks.)
I may still be focusing the majority of my sports attention on my Phillies, but Sundays are for the Birds.
*Yes, I know that it’s not really Kolb’s fault, and that he clearly needs more blocking. That’s just not the point, though.

Strange the things we’ll forgive in America. What a country! Of course, my team’s QB (Go STEELEERS!!) will be sitting for another two weeks, thank you very much Commissioner.
Although, I don’t think Mikey V is going to get you any closer to a Lombardi than Donovan did. Unlike the sports media who’ve been gushing over him like tween girls for Justin Bieber, I, personally, don’t think Vick is all that and a bag of chips.
Perhaps he isn’t, but look at our options.
And yeah, I’m still not holding my breath for even a playoff spot.
i was awfully confused why folks here were so pissed off to get mcnabb – he might not have won you guys any titles, but he’s a HELLUVA BETTER OPTION than campbell, jeeeezuz.
so, i understand WHY people are pissy w/vick, but then again… i don’t. we have guys in this league who have killed HUMAN PEOPLE and people don’t care if their team drafts them. this guy went to jail! he did time! i’m not saying i’d hire him to watch my (imaginary) children, but to play football? NO PROBLEMO.
That’s actually a really good point on the Vick issue. You’re right – I don’t know why there’s such a different standard there.
As for McNabb, most Redskins fans I’ve talked to aren’t too upset about having him. You’re right on – they see him as a better option than Campbell. But I don’t know if that’s saying too much…
Sorry its been so long since I commented… To say the least Ive been busy.
BUT.
I had to comment on this one.
I honestly dont like Vick, BUT reid would have been stupid not to start him. Im not buying into the hype YET- because well, the Lions are the Lions. But he sure looked a whole lot better than Kolb and you have got to go with whats best for the team regardless how popular the decision is.
I commend andy reid for going against his original statements and doing whats best for philly.
ok, Im done now.
